We are all home safely. We arrived in Leeds a little later than expected but we all had good memories of our stay in France at Chateau des Vaux. We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone, staff and students who made our stay so pleasant and trouble free. Merci beaucoup. We look forward to your visit to Askham Bryan.

Ils sont sur le départ. Hier nous avons visité un établissement qui est spécialisé dans les publics handicapés. Après-midi très interessante pour Anne, Jim et Kirstie. They are on the departure. Yesterday we visited an establishment which is specialized in the disable people. The afternoon very interessante for Anne, Jim and Kirstie. Mais c’est déjà fini et il faut continuer pour tous ceux qui arrivent derrière. But it is already finished and it is necessary to continue for all those who arrive behind. See you soon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

BLOG 09 Sunday 10/05/09 Departures and Arrivals Day Jude and John went home and were replaced by students Simon from Guiborough and Jessica from York. They came with two staff, Julie and Jim. There was a hold up in customs due to the French bank holiday, so it was a long day, arriving at the Château at 11.30pm. Monday 11/05/09 and Tuesday 12/05/09 The activities for the day were landscaping in the morning followed by work in the nursery in the afternoon, preparing and planting trays with seeds and cuttings. Students from both France and England managing to overcome any language barriers to produce some excellent work. An early night was followed by an even earlier wake up call for the trip to the Palace of Versailles. 6am came quickly and was very wet and dreary. We set off in three buses for Versailles, which due to roadworks, the weather and creative navigation, took longer than expected. The Château at Versailles was described by students as « awesome ; fantastic ; brilliant ; amazing ». After we had looked around the Château and taken lots of photographs the weather had improved and we had a French car park pic-nic followed by a visit to Marie Antoinette`s English Garden. A shorter return journey in lovely weather left enough time before dinner for students to complete their photo challenge, whilst Anne and Jim went with French staff to a film presentation in Châtres. This was a series of informative films made by Château des Vaux students highlighting challenges they face. These films can be accessed through the Château des Vaux website. Wednesday 13/05/09 Wednesday morning was equestrian morning with Pascal. All horses and ponies were groomed by us, including picking out their hooves before we got saddles (selles) and bridles (filets) and tacked up. When all were ready it was into the ménage to learn how to start, stop and sit straight. This is where David showed his prowess at holding his arms out whilst balancing on a moving horse (pictures to follow). When Pascal was satisfied everyone was safe we moved out onto the local tracks for riding experience. The weather was lovely and the scenery beautiful. When the riding was complete it was back to the Château for a French lunch of Cassoulet or chicken, rice, salad and desserts. In the afternoon another session of horticulture……….more later. À bientôt. Some comments from our students : Kris : Liked the visit to the Châteaux and the paintings and is enjoying being with friends. David : Likes the wildlife and taking photographs. Simon : It’s good, learning new things and French words. A good flight and new experience – not missing home. Geoffrey : The time is going so fast. Food is good. We had good weather last week. It was good steering the horses. Jamie : Liked the palace and has met new people. Tutors taking time to show how to do things. Joe : It’s cold (he sqid this whilst wearing shorts and a t-shirt). Jess : A nice day yesterday. Nathan : It was sunny until the new people came !
